--- Die Handelsbeziehungen zwischen den USA und China werden härter: Die Bush-Regierung will die Importe von Textilien aus dem Reich der Mitte drastisch einschränken, berichtet die New York Times. Dabei beruft sie sich auf eine Klausel aus den Vereinbarungen zum WTO-Beitritt Chinas:

The administration did not contend that Chinese producers had broken any rules. Rather, it invoked protective provisions that China agreed to as a condition for admission to the World Trade Organization in 2001. They allow the United States to limit the growth of Chinese textile imports to 7.5 percent a year if they are deemed "disruptive" to American producers. The categories of goods the administration is seeking to curb have been growing at rates that are well into the double digits. American textile companies say they have been forced to cut 316,000 jobs over the last three years and blame Chinese competition for a large part of that loss.

--- China droht derweil mal wieder dem "Bruderland" Taiwan mit Krieg: Der Vizeminister der für Taiwan zuständigen Staatsratsabteilung in der Volksrepublik China, Wang Zaixi, verbreitete eine ungewöhnlich scharfe Erklärung. Sollte die Regierung in Taipeh die volle staatliche Souveränität anstreben, so werde man die Armee gegen die Insel einsetzen.
