The nature of German industry - with its emphasis on highly engineered, capital-intensive products - has made it less vulnerable to a wholesale transfer of factories to China. Indeed, China has been a voracious consumer of German machines, helping to buoy exports. "If you're sitting in Germany, China is not that big a deal," said Daniel Gros, the director of the Center for European Policy Studies in Brussels. "If you're in Italy, which has a textile industry, it is a big deal."
